Cambodia and Nepal will press for direct flights between the two countries to encourage tourism, Prime Minister Hun Sen said after a meeting on Monday.
Hun Sen hosted Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli in Phnom Penh on Monday and later wrote on Facebook that it would make sense to link the country that has Angkor Wat with the country where the Buddha was born.
“The Chamber of Commerce between the two countries can sign a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries, who can work with each other,” Hun Sen wrote after the meeting.
The Nepalese prime minister agreed to the request, Hun Sen wrote. Nepal and Cambodia started diplomatic relations in 1964 but have not had ambassadors in each other’s countries since civil war broke out in the 1970s.
Hun Sen said he hoped this situation could soon be rectified too.
In 2018, tourist arrivals to Cambodia topped 6.2 million — and increase of 11 percent compared to 2017 — bringing in an estimated $4.3 billion.
