Four inmates briefly escaped Kandal prison on Saturday after officers opened its gate to let prisoners exercise outside, its prison director said.
It is the second known jailbreak at the prison this year, after five inmates escaped in January.
Prison director Chat Sineang said on Sunday that three of Saturday’s escapees were in jail for drugs, and the fourth for violent crimes.
“We unlocked the door gate to let them exercise outside, and they rushed to the door and attempted to run away outside,” Sineang said. “But our forces intervened to apprehend them again.”
The prison is located near central Takhmao city, the provincial capital.
The January escape, meanwhile, involved fighting between guards and prisoners, who climbed over wire fencing around the compound.
In February, a Chinese drug “mastermind” also escaped Phnom Penh’s Prey Sar prison during a hospital visit. The man, linked to the seizures of more than 2 tons of drugs, was due to have surgery at the Khmer-Soviet hospital when he disappeared.
