A new ruling-party commune chief in Koh Kong province has refused to accept a petition from village residents asking for a resolution to their dispute against Senator Ly Yong Phat.
The Koh Kong Provincial Court placed seven Botum Sakor residents under court supervision for alleged incitement and occupying state land, after the group returned to land they used to live on before it was given to a sugar plantation.
The residents say they’re occupying land taken from them about a decade ago by sugarcane plantations run by CPP Senator Ly Yong Phat.
Koh Kong villagers said that authorities have been clearing their crops since last week in the province’s Botum Sakor district, with authorities saying the people were encroaching on the Botum Sakor National Park.
