Cambodian students are failing at Khmer language and Math at significantly higher rates post-pandemic — with bigger drops for boys and city dwellers — an official survey has found.
The Education Ministry has announced that schools of all levels will be reopened from November 1 with health precautions remaining in place, expanding on the reopening of high schools last month.
All grade 12 students will pass without taking their year-end exams due to disruptions from Covid-19, Prime Minister Hun Sen said in a surprise announcement on Tuesday that had the Education Ministry and others in the sector unable to immediately answer questions about university admissions and scholarships.
About 400 private schools have gradually reopened since last month out of 600 applicants for “stage two” reopenings, the Education Ministry said on Thursday.
The Education Ministry will allow grade 9 and 12 students from one public high school in Phnom Penh, and students across four provinces deemed “low-risk” for Covid-19 transmission, to head back to classrooms in just over a week, following six months of shuttered schools.
The government will allow 20 private schools to reopen next month in order to pilot Covid-19 school safety guidelines, according to a letter dated Tuesday from the Council of Ministers.
About 800 samples were tested for Covid-19 in Cambodia last week — less than half of the number tested the week before — while Health Ministry and WHO representatives on Monday said that the country remains at risk for outbreaks and needs to adjust to a “new normal.”
Cambodia will ban entry for foreigners traveling from five Western nations for 30 days, beginning on Tuesday, and close schools in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap City in an effort to halt the spread of Covid-19, government ministries said on Saturday.
