Final checks ahead of Saturday’s Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville expressway opening have found residents cutting barbed wire fencing so they can graze cows by the road and sell food to motorists, the Transport Ministry said.
More than 200 officers demolished dozens of Phnom Penh houses to make way for the $2-billion Sihanoukville expressway, part of China’s Belt and Road initiative, as residents rejected what they said was inadequate compensation.
Families refusing to leave their homes to make way for a Chinese-built expressway from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville will bear the brunt of Cambodia’s Expropriation Law, Prime Minister Hun Sen said at the road’s groundbreaking ceremony last week.
