The Candlelight Party said it wants to negotiate with the government to ensure the release of its vice president Thach Setha, who was arrested in a check bouncing case in which the plaintiff has close ties to the ruling party.
Candlelight vice president Thach Setha was arrested Monday evening in an alleged check bouncing case and sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, according to a police spokesperson.
Prime Minister Hun Sen has asked all Candlelight Party commune councilors to defect and retain their positions in a new party, while also challenging three senior opposition officials to renounce Sam Rainsy.
The Candlelight Party’s vice president said their support was only growing and would “burn” away the CPP, in response to a ruling party spokesperson’s comment that the opposition party will fade away.
