As the new Sihanoukville expressway opened over the weekend, one set of road signs stood out: an apparent directive for “no axes,” which a company official later explained was meant to remind motorists to not cut down forests along the road.
One of the country’s key trucking routes linking the capital to Sihanoukville’s coastal port is set for widening in a $100-million, World Bank-financed project starting next year, as a parallel expressway under construction is also now about 50 percent complete, the Transport Ministry said.
Around a third of truck drivers on the road could be unlicensed, Transport Minister Sun Chanthol said on Thursday, comparing total registrations of trucks versus licenses over 30 years.
