SYHJ Garment, a Chinese-owned factory in Kandal province’s Ang Snuol district, fired three leaders of a newly emerging union in April, leading to a Labor Ministry directive that the terminations violated Trade Union Law protections for shop steward and union leaders. But the factory has remained defiant.
The union at Phnom Penh’s NagaWorld casino has extended its leadership election for two days to try to garner more votes due to fears it will face obstacles in renewing its registration amid a protracted labor dispute.
The trio of fired workers were employed at SYSG Garment factory in Ang Snoul district and said they were terminated without cause or notice last week.
Only about 400 of an estimated 2,000 members of the embattled union have so far voted five days into a seven-day leadership election.
Striking NagaWorld workers pushed back at the casino company’s position that losses in the first half of 2021 justified mass layoffs, pointing to the three years of profits preceding the pandemic-induced slowdown and the ongoing construction of NagaWorld 3.
