The body of a 7-year-old girl who went missing on her way to school was found buried in a field near the school, officials said.

Poipet city police chief Sao Saroeun said the girl disappeared Wednesday morning.

“The child left for school at 6:45 a.m., but she didn’t attend the flag salute,” Saroeun said.

She also did not turn up to class and her teacher had marked her as absent, the police chief added. The police department was unable to provide more information on Thursday.

Poipet commune chief Hok Chon said the girl was in Grade 2, and lived just about 250 meters from the school. Her body was found in a field about the same distance away from the school, Chon said.

“They knew something was there because there was a spot in that field that seemed freshly dug,” he said. “They found the body there.”

Police were still investigating, and the motive of the murder was still unclear, he added.

Tumnup Tuek Kor 5 village chief Chun Sheng said he didn’t have any information about the case.
