The Foreign Ministry has taken umbrage with an infographic shared in a Telegram group that classified Cambodia’s training of Ukrainian deminers as military support.
Pressure from foreign states was forcing Cambodia to choose friends and enemies in the international arena, Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Friday, repeating his frequent claim that the government would not exchange its sovereignty for aid from any country.
Prime Minister Hun Sen has described Cambodia’s relationship with China as being as strong as “steel” after the regional powerhouse that has helped buttress his regime in recent years pledged $90 million more for the country’s military.
The Phnom Penh embassies of the U.S. and China — whose governments have a dubious history of destabilizing Cambodia for their own geopolitical ends and both stoked and prolonged the country’s two-decades-long civil war — have become embroiled in their second Internet flame war over the country this year.
Cambodia has signed more than $11 billion in concessional loans as of the end of 2018 – 41 percent coming from China – the Finance Ministry reported Tuesday.
