More than 300 people from Koh Kong province protested in Phnom Penh on Monday over more-than-decadelong land disputes with companies that were granted concessions by the government, and that demonstrators say pushed them off their plots.
About 20 residents of Koh Kong province’s Kiri Sakor and Botum Sakor districts involved in a land dispute with the Union Development Group (UDG) said Chinese diplomats on Monday pledged to help them find a resolution to their 11-year-old woes after they made a five-hour trip to Phnom Penh to protest at the embassy.
Residents living around the $3.8-billion resort project by China’s Union Development Group (UDG) say they are worried for their safety after even their Cambodian People’s Party commune chief has now been summoned for questioning over a road they were building to local population centers.
